Top Magic and NBA news: Wednesday, March 10

Dwight Howard pulls down a rebound in Tuesday's Orlando Magic win over the Los Angeles Clippers (Stephen M. Dowell/Orlando Sentinel) The Orlando Magic routed the lowly Los Angeles Clippers last night. And to add insult to insult, the Clippers announced during the game that they had severed ties with their general manager, Mike Dunleavy. In other NBA news, former Magic point guard Rafer Alston explained his sudden absence the Miami Heat. And Eddie Jordan might soon be out as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Matt Barnes fires back at Lamar Odom with diaper tweet

10 March 2010

Lamar Odom continues to talk about Matt Barnes (photo of Barnes by Gary W. Green/Orlando Sentinel, photo of Odom by Alex Gallardo/Los Angeles Times) The war of words between Orlando Magic forward  Matt Barnes  and Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom took a gross, but sarcastic, turn this morning when Barnes posted this message on his Twitter account : “Morning yall up early w/ the babies watchn Dora. Seems Lamar can’t keep my name out his mouth maby I need 2 put my sons shitty diaper n it” First, some background. The Magic defeated the Lakers 96-94 on Sunday, and Barnes was a key driving force behind Orlando’s victory. Barnes and Mickael Pietrus  spent the game guarding Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant , and while Bryant scored 34 points, Bryant made only 12 of his 30 shot attempts. Throughout the game, Barnes provided toughness and at times appeared to try to irritate Bryant. After the game, Odom likened Barnes to pro wrestler Ric Flair and said, “[Barnes] was an action figure today. He was really involved and really into the game. It’s too bad we are not going to see him again [in the regular season].” Then, after last night’s 109-107 Lakers victory over the Toronto Raptors, Odom said, according to ESPN.com , “That [expletive] that Matt Barnes pulled, that ain’t never going to happen again.” That quote seems to be what prompted Barnes to post his diaper tweet. Barnes is the kind of player who players love to have on their team but hate to face. He’s in the Bruce Bowen mold, a defensive specialist who gets under opponents’ skin. The knock on the Magic from some critics had been that the team wasn’t tough enough. Well, there’s no doubt that Barnes brings some toughness and grit — and, perhaps, diapers – to the table. Magic are better than last year, yes

09 March 2010

Brian Schmitz' Orlando Magic Post-Game Post Observations, musings and meanderings while wondering if the Clippers can become a hit rehab reality show: — The 45-20 Magic are in playoff mode, improving to 19-5 the second half of the season after beating the Clippers. The veterans have hit the switch. And I didn’t think I’d say this, but yes, this team is better than last year’s — even though they won’t win 59. — How can that be? Dwight Howard is better, Jameer Nelson is playing like he did last season before he got hurt, and the Magic are deeper. And, trust me, Vince Carter is saving more of himself for the playoffs than you think. — But I don’t think they can beat the Lakers in a Finals rematch. The Lakers are too big and they have Lamar Odom, a matchup problem, and Kobe, the ultimate closer. — Stan Van Gundy played Dwight Howard about the first 32 minutes against the Clips, taking him out late in the third. For a coach who usually sticks to his rotations, it was  a strange decision. Howard was surprised and I still don’t get it. — Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald was in the Magic’s locker room afterwards, waiting to meet Howard. One of them can always be counted on to catch the ball in traffic. — Howard was going on about playing defensive end as a youth in, I guess, some Pop Warner league. — Sandra Bullock wins an Oscar. All things are possible, maybe health care reform now.  “Did I really earn this or did I wear you all down?” she said. Good question. — Listening to Jeff Bridges ramble, I wonder if has he ever broke out of his role as “The Dude” in “The Big Lebowski.” — The Clippers game marked the Magic’s 60th consecutive sell-out, dating to last season, according to the club. —  Now it comes out that Allen Iverson is in trouble with all his drinking and gambling. Never saw that coming. —- God bless the Clippers. Don’t ever change. What other sports franchise provides such levity? They announce they are firing their GM during the Magic game. Players and coaches don’t even know. Stop it. You’re killing me. — If it’s true that Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown has been secretly negotiating to be the Clippers coach, Michael Jordan ought to fire him immediately. In fact, Jordan should get him help. if Brown wants to join the Clippers organization, he isn’t in the right frame of mind to coach, period. — Look for the Magic to try to take a point guard in the draft, perhaps even moving up to do so.
